Back in the early days, I tried advertising on my various websites. I didn't have a whole lot of traffic, but people would click on banners and stuff. The problem was, it seemed so intrusive. These were the days of modems, so putting up images would decrease the user's experience by making them wait for an ad to load that they probably didn't want to see anyway.
Recently, Jackie and I have been again throwing around ideas to make some money on our websites. We have a hell of a lot more traffic now, but no revenue. We decided to go with Google's adsense back in January. For some reason, I put it up, and then just forgot about it. Never thought of it again. Then we had a server crash, everything had to be rebuilt. I didn't put the adsense stuff back in.
Flash forward to two weeks ago. Coming to the same problem. Was thinking of even shutting down a website because it was just a pain in the ass. No money coming in, just some headaches. I decided to look at what we had accomplished with adsense. No IDEA why I didn't do it earlier. We were making like 2 bucks a day off this thing! Doesn't sound like much, but it's like free money! It comes out to 60 bucks a month. WHOA, can anyone say, helps with the server cost?
The AdSense stuff pays way more than I was getting with the old banner ads. With those I'd get like 2 cents for each click. See how that wasn't worth it? AdSense pays different amounts for different clicks but they're more like 50 cents per click. AND they're only text.
It's like having my website users buy me lunch. I've always begged for money through the website because I was putting so much time and effort into it. "It's like buying me lunch for a job well done". NO ONE would "buy me lunch". The thing is now, I don't have to beg, and money still trickles in. I love it! Forget lunch, keep clicking on those ads people! :)
