Vista + Sound Blaster Live

Vista installed just fine, recognized my nVidia graphics card, canon printer, NIC, etc.  One glaring omission was my Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 sound card.

A trip over to Creative's website was worthless.  No drivers were currently available for my card and I got the impression they weren't going to waste the effort.

Willie said that is pretty typical of Creative and suggested searching for user contributed drivers.  It took a bit of digging but finally stumbled upon a modded driver from NGO HQ that, when installed in XP Compatibility Mode, had my sound card working in no time.

Hope this helps someone else enjoy Vista with full fidelity.

Well, before installing any 3rd party unsupported driver, do a BACKUP. Also, if you are waiting for Creative Labs to make a driver good luck....their support lasts about as long as the warranty on the card itself. They already said they aren't making one. Thanks for the link I will definately try it out.

Creative are pathetic. I won't buy any more kit from a company that can't support a product for more than 5 mins - lesson learned.

This is an alternate way of getting a working driver from the *official* installer:

* Get LiveDrvUni-Pack(ENG).exe from Creative's web site
* Run the installer, it will display the checking CRC window
* It will then tell you it can't find an SB card - oh yeah? Leave the dialog alone, we need it there for the moment
* Owing to the magic way the installer works it has already unpacked all the driver files onto your hard disk, as soon as the installer exits it will delete them - so don't let that installer exit yet
* Open an Explorer window, navigate to %USER%\AppData\Local\Temp and look for the most recently created directory (mine was called CRF000. There will be an Audio\Drivers directory under it, navigate to this directory. (BTW substitute %USER% with your user name)
* Copy the path from the path bar at the top of your Explorer window.
* Now open the Device Manager (Windows key+Break), select the 'unknown audio' device, right click and then select 'Update Driver Software' and then 'Browse my computer for software'.
* Now paste the path to the driver into the text box and press next. The driver should now install. That's it!

Now you can close the installer window. You now should have a working Live! soundcard.

You know, this soundblaster issue is well known to Creative and it's really Microsoft's doing. There's a good article about how they've changed the audio system in Vista and how that effects cards that support EAX. A must read.

Quote: "* Owing to the magic way the installer works it has already unpacked all the driver files onto your hard disk, as soon as the installer exits it will delete them - so don't let that installer exit yet"

Or just in more simple way, use WinRAR and extract the package directly to your hdd, where ever you want it to (for example, right click and "extract here"). Then go to device manager and manually update the driver over the windows driver.. Works like a charm here, for games also... EAX seems to work, but haven't tested it yet for all games. :)

There is only one problem, CD-Audio in games doesn't really work (It's like muted whatever it's not), and i tried to Capture the Audio with Fraps, i haven't got that to work whatever it worked on previous Vista RC2 release.. :'(

How do I get 5.1 sound?
is there support for the soundbank memory?
Midi?

When i had Windows XP, I used to use my SBL 5-1 card for 5.1 dolby digital move viewng, music, MIDI, and loading sound fonts into it's memory using the SW that came with the card.

is any of this possible anymore in Vista?

if it is not possible anymore, can anyone recommend a new card that will do all of the above in vista?

I have to agree, Creative can go suck a donkey now. I have used all versions of Vista since Beta 2, Not once did I have any problems getting Stereo sound with the default drivers that Vista installed, I got skipping sound, etc. Now I go to the shop buy the full version, install it and what am I surprised with, "Sorry this hardware is not compatible with Windows Vista" This came up in the Solutions Checker and gave me a link to Creatives website, what did this page do? Well it took me straight to Creatives Shop to buy a new card from them.

Am I the only one to get this? Windows Update has had the driver deleted. I'm currently using the kX driver, it works but not very well. I am installing NGO's driver and hope it works better. I am furious with Creative, they obviously told Microsoft to remove a driver that did work perfectly in RTM. But seriously sending me to a online shop to buy a new sound card, that takes the biscuit.

The NGO drivers work alot better, still no 5.1. Decent Bass Performance. However the drivers would not install if I selected the Gamer option.

I am glad this site is almost at the top of the Google Search Results for Sound Blaster Live Vista, so many people will find this useful. I suggest some one posts a Comment on Creatives own forums linking to this site.

You can also run drivers' installer using Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode (rigt click on .exe - properties - compatibility) - i think it's the easiest way, works fine. Though Vista can't install Creative Game Port Driver, which is left as asn unrecognized device. But I have a question - does anybody have a stange echo while listening SB Live! and external amplifier? On XP it worked without any problem.. It's not nice to hear echos in "Pink Floyd - Echoes" track;) Even windows sounds are echoed.

you don't even need anymore the creative sound card :P, just get a switch with two inputs lines (it is only 1$ you can get it from any sound accessories shop) plug it to the out port of ur MB sound card. plug the black and the green cables with it and then enjoy you visat as well your 5.1 sound
And now Creative can go suck a donkey

I have the same problem with Vista Business. I managed to get digital sound to work with the trickery, but I can't even find the bass/treble settings anywhere in the mixer. It looks so basic, how to choose record sources and stuff now? I tried sndvol32.exe from XP but it doesn't find a mixer device. Also I can't find the MIDI device anywhere which means no midi-out/in thru joystick port connector. :( Also when playing midis they sound like coming from the Microsoft software synthesizer, no midi-out and no even live's hardware wavetable available. The joystick port driver is also missing, which I don't need though. A big minus for Creative and Microsoft for supporting a popular sound card this badly.

Well, because you installed the whole package with control panels, you get the echoing on by default (aka 3d-sounds), and as the control panels only crash in vista, you can't turn it off... That's why you should extract the driver off from the package and install only the driver - that was the whole point why it should be extracted.

However the ngo driver works better here, even with the fraps and all other programs, so i recommend that driver instead...

I think I have found THE solution. I don't know how this works exactly but there seems to be a project called kx that develops universal drivers for soundcards. These work very welll with sblive 5.1 and vista. I get full surround and all options I had before on XP. Be sure to read the help cos Windows will complain about unsigned driver and want to reboot but you need to ignore that. Good luck to all! I've had a bad experience with the NGO drivers. At first they worked providing only basic sound support (no EAX, no 5.1, no Bass/treble). And they only work by choosing the music version and not the gamer one.

After a while, I added RAM memory to my system, going from 1 GB to 2.5 GB. After this change, the NGO drivers make Vista crash with a BSOD, saying either "memory management error" or "Page fault in nonpage area" or "irq not less than equal". But it's not a hardware problem, XP and Linux run without problems and of course, I ran a couple of memory diagnostic tools. When I removed the NGO drivers all the BSODs went away.

I will now try installing the official drivers.

It works great. I have a Dell Dimension 8200 that came with SB Live Value edition and his method works very well. I would even venture out here ans say it's better than when MSFT had the live WDM driver as part of Windows Update (this solved a power management issue with sound). Thank you.

And I tried the KX drivers, both the final and the RC, both worked but they were clunky with an extra service running and the software has an icon in the notification area of taskbar that cannot be disabled. The KX software has to always be running for any sound to work.

I've tried the NGO drivers, and right, there is no sound when using the Games option. The Music option works fine but, Windows shows BSODs when I tried to use 4 speaker output (on the NGO's Control Panel).
Going to try the KX though..

Now, I downloaded the newest version of Kx projecect audio drivers http://download.kxproject.lugosoft.com/downloads/kxdrv3538m-full.exe and installed, following all the prompts that the program gives.

After the reboot, KX drivers and control panel come up as if vista became XP. Hope this works for the rest of ya!

# NO NEED FOR THIS

Left by Expendis at 7/19/2007 1:51 AM

There is NO NEED to download this application.
I started the windows installation procedure where it looks online for drivers and then it would usually tell you that drivers are unavailable.

To my surprise, this was no the case. In fact it found the drivers, installed them in minutes(literally about 2 minutes) and then my SB Live! Value worked flawlessly without a restart.

# RE: NO NEED FOR THIS

I based my previous post on the sound successfully coming from my iPod into the sound card and out the speakers. After installing the windows drivers, I noticed that the sound quality was horrible on windows sounds and applications, even though it was fine on line-in.

Pretty much: You're better off following these following instructions ( which work seemlessly, with great sound quality :D ) posted by I'm Mad as Hell.... above:

* Get LiveDrvUni-Pack(ENG).exe from Creative's web site

You now should have a working Live! soundcard.

I've been using the live drivers base on the instruction by expendis. The problem is that the sound mixer on my vista 32 bit ... if i click on it and then adjust the sound and then close it back... it somehow got "stuck" in which i cannot click anything on the task bar except to logout or reboot. Anyone having the same problem?

I'm using a "SB Live Value!" This installed alright but for some reason, I got no actual sound output at all even though the audio was passing through (i.e. I could see the sound levels indicators). Anyway, I actually got my original XP drivers to install by running in compatibility mode for XP. Both analog output and even the "digital out" works just fine. The drawback is no access to the audio tools (e.g. EAX, surround mixer, etc) and no bass/treble controls (both problems probably due to the obmission of the Hardware Abstraction Layer).

Many has said here that everything is working like charm and many has said that they can get 5.1 to work also. I agree that there is no problem to get proper sound easily, just install drivers from Windows Update and set how many speakers you have and there you are.

But still after many days of trying with different solutions I've found I can't get AC3/Dolby Digital 5.1 sound with SB Live 5.1 and my Sony external amplifier that is connected via SB's digital output with coaxial cable.

I think that the problem is that SB does not pass AC3 to amp so the amp could do the AC3 decoding.

There is no problem with stereo sound, but I really would like to watch my DVD's with 5.1 instead of stereo/Dolby Pro Logic.

Now I'm asking, has anybody got AC3 to work with external amplifier with 5.1?

This is to zafierx
You must go to control pannel
doubleclick folder options
click in the 2nd tab on:
Show hidden files
click apply and you see appdata.
This is the method with the classic view for control pannel.

Thanks a lot for these hints! Meanwhile, Sound Blaster Live drivers get installed through Windows Update. However, I've had bad sound distortion / overmodulation problems. Switching the speaker setup to 5.1 in the Windows control panel got rid of them.

Hello,

I seen before that someone else had an issue with a echo/reverb sound being present with the Creative drivers. I just wondered if anyone found a way to fix it. It's almost like the EAX reverb is stuck on.
